Workshop: Beam Editions - An unholy trinity
On the artist, designer and publisher in collaboration

Coinciding with our December Bookshop, Jonathan Casciani explains how collaboration between the artist, designer and publisher is central to the publishing practice of Beam Editions. This talk and workshop will unpack how the collaborative dynamic can be harnessed, and will share insight into the ‘eight layers’ Beam Editions uses as a method when developing a book.

Artists, designers, curators and writers or anyone interested in producing a fine art publication are invited to join the talk and workshop. Participants will also be invited to talk about their current book projects, propose ones or simply discuss the seed of an idea. Jonathan will work with each participant in a group situation to explore the different ways in which their  projects can be developed.

This is a rare opportunity to work with the publisher during his visit to Copenhagen. Workshop places are limited to a maximum of 6 people.

Jonathan Casciani from Beam Editions will hold the talk You can't learn that on Instagram, which explores how the book works as an antidote to a ‘monoculture’ of learning exacerbated through social and digital media. Jonathan Casciani explains how Beam Editions’ unique books are a result of a collaborative and non-industrialised way of working that results in books that are ‘grown’ within a flourishing ecosystem rather then squeezed through an impersonal assembly line. 

The talk will be a opportunity to meet the publisher, ask questions about its direction and projects this special UK publisher has developed over the last 12 months.

Beam’s recent books include Etiquette of the Arms Trade by Jill Gibbon, an exposé of the international arms trade; Dear Nature - 81 Letters to Nature in 81 Days by John Newling; Sounds Like Her - Gender, Sound Art and Sonic Cultures; No Telos - an artist research project embracing practices of ‘slowness and disorientation’; and Equilibrio - Linda Karshan, art, architecture and Sacred Geometry.
