It’s hard to justify the amount of time needed to work with old wood, when work hours cost more than high quality materials. So if we are to reuse wood, how do we raise the value of it to compensate for the extra work involved?
In these workshops we shall explore the Japanese wabi-sabi aesthetic of imperfections and impermanence. We attempt to add value and charm to unwanted wood covering:
- Nail removal with gratitude
- Brushing with the grain
- Patching up time
- Filling in time
The participants explore the techniques with wood, to make something of their choice or of the woods inner function or totem charm. Such as a walking stick, wood stack, totem pole or a charming paperweight. Or whatever you decide together with the material.
Train your Design attitude:
In this workshop we work hands-on and open-eyed with materials to train your Design Attitude. Nurture our empathy through listening and looking with wood. Playfully bring to life what no one else is seeing. Search for quality through making things better. Tackle complexity and ambiguity in discovering meaning in the meaningless.
Teaching will be hands on, visual and reflective:
Be introduced to samples and demonstrations of wabi-sabi inspired techniques for bringing out the charm of old wood.
Explore the techniques hands on giving unwanted wood new life with use of simple hand tools and techniques.
Working with the unwanted wood found in the off cut wood box from the unwanted materials workshop, we bring new life to the unwanted of the unwanted.
Participants need to bring their own: Dress to not worry about getting messy clothes.
The workshop will take place at the following dates:
September 4, Wednesday 17.00 - 20.00
October 2, Wednesday 17.00 - 20.00
October 30, Wednesday 17.00 - 20.00
