Wednesday December 4^th at 17.00.

The Chair of Inuit Circumpolar Council, Sara Olsvig, will speak on the importance of Arctic cooperation, the status, rights and roles of Indigenous Peoples in Arctic governance, and the need for a continued political willingness to keep the Arctic a peaceful region.

After the talk and a Q&A, the Greenland Representation will offer refreshments.

Inuit Circumpolar Council (ICC)
Founded in 1977, Inuit Circumpolar Council (ICC) is the international Indigenous Peoples’ Organization that represents 180.000 Inuit living across Inuit Nunaat, including Kalaallit Nunaat (Greenland), Canada, Alaska, and Chukotka (Russia). ICC promotes the unity and rights of Inuit and engages in international fora to bring the voice of Inuit directly to negotiations on human rights, marine governance, climate change, biodiversity and much more. ICC brings not only the unique governance perspectives of Indigenous Peoples to the table, but also contributes with invaluable knowledge about Arctic governance models to include Indigenous Knowledge and aspirations. ICC is a co-founder and Permanent Participant to the Arctic Council and holds consultative status to the UN. The organization is currently the only Indigenous Peoples’ Organization with observer status in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and holds a provisional consultative status in the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

Sara Olsvig
Sara Olsvig is the International Chair of the Inuit Circumpolar Council. Olsvig is a long-time Indigenous Peoples’ and human rights defender, and a politician who has served as member of the Parliament of Denmark (2011–2015) and the Parliament of Greenland (2013–2018). Olsvig was the Government of Greenland’s Vice Premier and Minister for Affairs, Families, Gender Equality and Justice in 20016-2018. Olsvig actively contributed to the work of the Constitutional Commission as well as the Human Rights Council of Greenland. She holds a Master of Science in Anthropology and is currently a PhD candidate at the Department of Arctic Social Science & Economics at Ilisimatusarfik, the University of Greenland. Olsvig is a recipient of the 2023 Womenomics Inclusion Award. Sara Olsvig is Inuk, and was born in Nuuk, Greenland, where she resides with her partner and their children.
