Meet the woman behind the architecture company BIG’s impressive growth. During the last decade Sheela Maini Søgaard has sharpened the focus on the company’s operations and turned BIG into a sustainable business.
With her master’s degree in Business Administration from CBS and her professional background in consulting and business development, Sheela was the perfect choice for CFO in BIG - chosen by Bjarke Ingels himself. It only took one cup of coffee to convince Bjarke of her capability – a strong business sense.
At the time in 2008 BIG was a small company with 45 employees and the business was struggling to break even. Within a few months Sheela managed to turn the course, and Bjarke soon handed over the title of CEO to Sheela – in that way, they could both concentrate on what they do best.
Fast forward to 2011, where BIG got the first big job in the USA. To ensure profitability in the newly opened New York office, Sheela moved her family with husband and three kids to the big city.
Balancing work and family life are vital to Sheela, and she has an admirable ability to do so. Sheela gives credits for this balance to her stay-at-home husband and healthy habits, which keeps her focused in all aspects of life.
Sheela brings her grounded attitude into the workplace, where Sheela is known to be crafting an uplifting atmosphere and a great team spirit.
Today BIG has 500+ employees divided on 4 offices in Copenhagen, New York, London and Barcelona, and are managing projects all over the world.
