Description

“Filema” is a contemporary Greek theatre work inspired by oral testimonies from the Nazi Occupation of Crete and a real historical event: the execution of 25 civilians in the village of Gergeri (Heraklion), following an act of hospitality — a shared meal that preceded the massacre. Drawing on this traumatic material, the play also unfolds a story of parallel reality, where history is interwoven with what might have been.

Set in the tavern of a mountainous village, in a world divided into humans and subhumans, shortly before the village is burned by the occupying forces, two people are confronted with a decision for which there is no right answer. The action moves between realism and the hypothetical, transforming the stage into a space of moral trial. Filema explores the fragile boundary between kindness and complicity, hospitality and fear, survival and dignity, hatred and forgiveness.

Written by Manos Kounougakis and directed by Lina Altiparmaki, the play was presented at Avaton Theatre for two seasons. The production received distinctions and strong critical acclaim, and the text was nominated for the prestigious Karolos Koun Theatre Awards in the category of Greek Playwriting.

Filema raises urgent questions about human nature, discrimination, and war — questions that feel more relevant to contemporary Europe than ever before.
