Den norske forfatter Tomas Espedal skriver i sporet af den tabte tid - eller rettere i sporene af alt, han har tabt. Sin ekskones død, sine døtres udflytning og den store kærlighed, der blev knust.
Samtalen tager udgangspunkt i Tomas Espedals bog "Året", der handler om at elske den samme hele livet - selv når kærligheden ikke bliver gengældt.
Det er en bog om aldring, desperation og dødslængsel, om stilstand og gentagelse. Handlingen begynder den 6. april, samme dato som den italienske renæssancedigter Petrarca første gang så sin elskede Laura. Findes denne uforgængelige og uforglemmelige kærlighed virkelig? Og er den stadig mulig at finde i vores tid?
