I slutningen af 1800-tallet havde København også sine gadebørn. Så mange var der, at kommunen fandt det fornødent at oprette en særlig institution til dem, nemlig et internat, som lå på Vesterfælledvej frem til 1905.
Takket være et righoldigt arkiv, som er bevaret på Københavns Stadsarkiv, er det muligt at følge drengene i hverdagen, fra deres ankomst til de forlod institutionen – som oftest for at komme på en opdragelsesanstalt langt væk fra den farlige storby.
På trods af den hårdhændede behandling drengene blev udsat for – eller netop derfor – blev stedet et socialpædagogisk forbillede bl.a. for Frederiksberg kommune, som indrettede børnefængsler på samtlige kommunale skoler. I sit foredrag vil professor Ning de Coninck-Smith fortælle om hverdagen på Internatet men også inddrage børnefængslerne på Frederiksberg.
