På Vesterbro kunne besættelsen mærkes. På turen hører vi om modstand, terror, bombninger og hverdagsliv i arbejderkvarteret Vesterbro.
Turen begynder ved Carlsberg og bevæger sig via Sønder Boulevard til Istedgade. Ruten går forbi åstederne for sabotage, nedskydninger og bombardementer – og ikke mindst Folkestrejken i 1944. Men Thomas Warburg fortæller også om folk og daglige forhold.
Vesterbro - og særligt Istedgade - fik en særlig status under krigen. Den folkelige modstand var til stede fra dag ét, og tyske soldater på orlov havde forbud mod at begive sig herhen. Selvom Vesterbro var et rødt kvarter, så blev den nationalt sindede modstandsgruppe Holger Danske stiftet i Stjerne Radios baglokaler.
Gennem krigen blev skruen strammet, og det blev sværere og sværere at holde sig udenfor på Vesterbro. I de grumme sidste år af krigen var Istedgade et yndet mål for tysk terror, hvor der blev begået gengældelsesdrab for sabotageaktioner.
Turen slutter ved Vesterbro Torv, med en fortælling om modstandarbejdet i Eliaskirkens krypt.
