Arkivar og historiker Peter Wessel Hansen fortæller om de københavnere, der søgte at forsøde de fattiges jul i 1800-tallet. Det var en tid uden hverken dagpenge, folkepension eller kontanthjælp og til hverdag måtte de fattige gå for lud og koldt vand. Det var ikke en dans på roser at få fattighjælp eller ende på fattighuset for hjælpen var knap og indebar, at man mistede en række rettigheder. Heldigvis var der mange helt almindelige mennesker, der gerne ville hjælpe de fattige og give dem en ekstra almisse – ikke mindst ved juletid. De fattige skulle også mærke, at det var jul.
