”Der var engang?” udspiller sig i år 1836. H.C. Andersen forsøger at lave en opfølger til sin første eventyrsamling, men han er fanget i en skriveblokade og kan ikke finde inspiration.
Takket være lidt magi får han muligheden for at komme til Eventyrland i tre dage for muligvis at kunne finde frem til den rette idé. Her møder han alle de kendte eventyrfigurer, fra Snehvide, Tornerose og Aladdin til Askepot, Pinnocchio og Rapunzel – som alle er optaget i kampen om at overtage kongeriget, da Kongen af Eventyrland netop har meddelt, at han vil træde tilbage. H.C. Andersen forsøger i virvaret at gøre en af figurerne til hovedpersonen i sit eventyr, men han kan ikke finde indgangsvinklen – og netop som hans tredje og sidste dag er ved at ende, finder han pludselig sin inspiration det mest uventede sted.
”Der var engang?” er fyldt med de største danske pophits fra 1990’erne og 2000’erne, der er flettet sammen med H.C. Andersens rejse på overraskende og opfindsom vis.
