    Description

    About Council in Schools:

    Saturday and sunday from 9.30-17.30

Council is a circle-based communication practice that fosters attentive listening and authentic expression. It brings relevance to and deepens understanding of academic curriculum, provides a structure for addressing social-emotional dynamics in the classroom, enables teachers to turn toward matters of interest to the children, and provides infrastructure for enlivening staff meetings, as well as parent and community involvement. Council promotes trust, respect, accountability, and joy. Through practicing council, students develop invaluable skill in the art of collaboration. Council is the foundation for a restorative justice approach to discipline in school.

    About HeartMath in Schools:

Friday the 25th of August from 9.30-17.30

HeartMath helps children and students reach their full potential.

HeartMath programs and technologies help students learn and master emotional awareness and self-regulation skills. These critical skills build a solid foundation for greater mental and emotional health, positive social behavior and relationships and academic excellence, all of which are essential for success and well-being in today’s fast-paced, complex world.

    Evidence-based and highly effective
Students who participate in HeartMath programs and use its technologies show significant improvements in impulse control and self-regulation, academic focus, decision-making and getting along better with teachers, peers and parents. Three of our key programs have been independently validated by the National Registry of Evidence-Based Programs (NREPP).

    You will learn:

    • How the heart is more than a muscle that pumps blood and how it can affect both our nervous system, hormonal balance and cognitive thinking, and applying this in the class room.
    • What is heart coherence and how to get into this state
    • How to guide both children and adults and yourself into heart coherence
    • How and when you can benefit from using this with children and in your teaching
    • Understand the benefits this brings to the children both now and in the long term
    • About HeartMath emWave technology via computer games and measurement and how this can help children to consciously switch their inner emotional state.

It only takes 5-10 minutes to use with students. But those few minutes will change both your and the students experience and cooperation in school, while given them a tool to use in future stressful or demanding situations.

    Marc Rosner

Director of Ojai Council in Schools

"Practicing council – listening and speaking to one another from the heart – changes the nature of our relationships, brings perspective, awareness, empathy, and accountability, and makes us more capable and resilient as individuals and communities."

Marc became involved with council in 2005 when, as a parent volunteer, he became an intern and then a facilitator of classroom councils at his daughters’ elementary school. Practicing council and sharing the practice with others has been an expanding part of his life ever since. In addition to working with Council in Schools as a consultant, facilitator, trainer, and now CIS Co-Director, Marc was a member of the board of directors of The Ojai Foundation for many years, using council for organizational leadership and governance. He is a certified facilitator of Restorative Community Conferences. A former teacher, Marc is also a lawyer and mediator, providing legal representation and dispute resolution services to families, communities, businesses, schools, and organizations.
