Maleren H.G.F. Holms skæbne var ikke spor anderledes end så mange andres. Han havde et talent, fik for lidt ud af det, og henslæbte sine dage i en evig jagt på det daglige brød.
Han malede et utal af landskabs- og bybilleder, solgte dem for en slik, havde mindreværdskomplekser og måske en snert af psykiske problemer, som gjorde det svært for ham.
Der var også en masse børn, som han tidligt blev ene-forælder til, og som alle voldte ham en bunke sorger på hver sin måde.
Og så har han altså efterladt en masse smukke billeder af byen, som den så ud i Guldalderens København.
Billeder af steder og bygninger, vi kender til bevidstløshed, og af dem, vi ikke anede havde eksisteret.
Nogle af dem tager vi med på denne tur i malerens fodspor, mens vi tager historien om maleren og hans by.
