ABOUT TONIGHT'S MOVIE
Film, fiction, forgery
In 1938, Orson Welles directed the radio drama “The War of the Worlds”, a fictional tale about a martian invasion of planet Earth. But when it first hit the airwaves, many of its listeners went into panic, believing it to be an actual news broadcast and the alien invasion to be real.
The fiction had been too real, Welles had conned his audience. Tonight’s film, which premiered in 1973, is also directed by Welles, and is also a work about deception and forgery, this time centered (initially) around the famous art-forger Elmyr de Hory.
But it quickly turns out that Elmyr is not the only fraudster in this story and that the line between artist and larcenist is sometimes almost invisible, as the film descends into a deep and intricate web of lies that seems to span the entire world of art, and even Welles himself.
It is a fast-paced and fascinating work of cinema, which helped push the limit of what a documentary can be, and we can’t wait to watch it with you!
