Jelling var omdrejningspunktet for store og radikale forandringer til det danske samfund i anden halvdel af det 10. århundrede. De to runesten fortæller historien om samlingen af det danske rige og integrationen med resten af Europa. Jelling fortæller også historien om starten på et dynasti, og om overgangen til kristendommen. I Jelling blev alle disse ting vist med monumenter i international klasse og størrelse.

Om foredragsrækken
Midt i Lejre Ådal rejser en lav gravhøj sig. Ved dens fod står en næsten 90 meter lang skibssætning. Ny forskning viser, at de to fortidsminder sandsynligvis blev opført samtidig i 600-tallet som samlet gravmonument. Gravhøjen rummer spor efter et storladent begravelsesritual og er blandt de største brandbegravelser fra yngre jernalder i Danmark.
Er dette det tætteste, vi hidtil er kommet på en virkelig konge af Lejre?
I 2026 fortæller Lejre Museum historien om begravelsen i Grydehøj i en særudstilling. Og i forårets foredragsrække giver fem fagfolk hver deres perspektiv på fortidens begravelsesritualer og gravmonumenter.
