Imens Bang boede på kollegiet, begyndte han at arbejde som journalist påFædrelandet og skrev gennembrudsromanen Haabløse Slægter. Protokollerne indeholder sarkastiske bemærkninger fra Bangs medkollegianere om hans væsen, seksualitet og avisskriverier.
