I anledning af 100-året for salget af Dansk Vestindien har Dansk Vestindisk Selskab arrangeret foredragsrækken ”Histories from a Shared Past – A Transatlantic Lecture Series”.

Her vil fire danske og fire udenlandske forskere tale om både historiske og nutidige samfundsforhold på U.S. Virgin Islands. Arrangementet, der foregår på engelsk, løber af stablen i weekenden den 10. og 11. juni 2017 i Harsdorff-salen på Rigsarkivet i København. Foredragene er som følger:

Lørdag d. 10. juni – fra klokken 13:30 til 18:00

  • Per Nielsen, cand.mag. i historie: “Citizenship – A Question or a Fact?”
  • Bolette Blaagaard, lektor, Aalborg Universitet: “Rereading The Herald (1915-1924): Journalism, Citizens and Cosmopolitanism in the Times of Colonialism.”
  • Astrid Nonbo Andersen, Ph.d., Postdoc ved Dansk Institut for Internationale Studier: “Figurations of Social Memories of Colonialism and Enslavement.”
  • Aske Stick, cand.mag. i historie: “The Complaint as a “Voice”—Slave Complaints on St. Croix, 1800-1850.”
Søndag d. 11. juni – fra klokken 9:00 til 13:15
  • Joshua Torres, Ph.d. National Park Service, Washington D.C.: “Crossroads of Culture: Pre-Colonial History and Socio - Cultural Development in the US Virgin Islands.”
  • Linda Rupert, Ph.d. Associate Professor at the Department of History, University of North Carolina, Greensboro: “Navigating Currents of Freedom: Runaway Slaves in Pan- Caribbean and Atlantic Perspective.”
  • Nadine Marchena- Kean, Caribbean Genealogy Library and the Virgin Islands Genealogical Society: “If Walls Could Talk: A Study of how the Shared – Built Environment Affected the Families that Live within It.”
  • Mark M. Smith, Ph.d. Carolina Distinguished Professor of History, University of South Carolina: “The Sensorium on a Constant Strain: A Sensory History of Natural Disasters in the Danish West Indies, 1867.”

I januar 2017 blev foredragsrækken afholdt på St. Croix og St. Thomas. Den 10.-11. juni er det så Københavns tur. Derefter afholdes foredragene i Flensborg den 13.-14. juni på Flensburger Schifffahrts Museum. Det er gratis at deltage.
