Det er ved at være juletid i Ebeltoft - dengang i 1864.
Det har i mange år været fast tradition, at byens lægepar Mathilde- og Frederik Skellerup, holder jule for byens fattige. Men dette år bliver det hele aflyst.
Frederik Skellerup, der var med ved Dybbøl som feltkirurg, forsvandt efter prøjserne og Østrigernes storm på skanserne. Siden har ingen set ham. Julen står for døren og alt ser ud til, at det bliver en meget trist jul.
Mathilde sørger og længdes og vil ikke stå for nogen julefestlig-holdelse. Da dukker de to tanter Dot og Bea op. De går straks i gang med at overtale Mathilde til at holde jul. Til dette bliver de støttet af By- og Herredsskriver Nissen, enkefru Torp von Lichtenstein og Bagermadam Nielsen. Tjenestefolkene, Husjomfru Othilde, Tjenestepigen Sofie og Gårdskarlen Jens ser til fra sidelinjen. Intet hjælper. Julen er og bliver aflyst. Da banker det på døren …
Bliver der jul i Ebeltoft? Når tante Bea at strikke sin julegave færdig? Overlever gæssene juleaften? Skal der bages brunkager? Hvad med kærligheden? … og hvad med de fattige på Fattiggården???
