The Pyramids skabte tilbage i starten af 1970’erne et særegent udtryk med et miks af afrobeat, vestafrikanske rytmer, funk og freejazz kombineret med psykedeliske stemninger, spiritualitet og et universelt budskab om lighed og frihed
The Pyramids' historie er lige så bemærkelsesværdig som deres musik. Ensemblet blev dannet i 1971 af Idris Ackamoor, bassisten Kimathi Asante og fløjtenisten Margo Simmons, med Ackamoor og Asante som de eneste, der er tilbage fra den oprindelige gruppe. Medlemmerne kom ud af periodens blomstrende freejazz-bevægelse, og havde bl.a. deres gang i freejazz-giganten Cecil Taylors store Black Music Ensemble Collective.
Men The Pyramids var var egentlig et overset ensemble i 1970’ernes jazzscene. Det blev kun til tre udgivelser i små oplag, inden de gik hvert til sit i 1977. Til gengæld opnåede pladerne kultstatus i årtierne efter og I 2007 - 30 år efter opløsningen - fik The Pyramids comeback ved med en genforeningskoncert. Koncerten blev fulgt op af genudgivelse af deres uopdrivelige 70’er klassikere, samt tre nye plader "Otherworldly" og to udgivelser på Strut Records, “We be all Africans” og “An Angel Fell”, som udkom tidligere i år.
Alle der har lyttet til Idris Ackamoor & The Pyramids plader eller oplevet dem live ved at ensemblet hverken har mistet energi eller opfindsomhed.
