Dub-pionerer indtager Rust med tungt bagkatalog
"The partners in dub" Lee "Scratch" Perry og Mad Professor har defineret dublyden siden 60'erne. Deres innovative produktionsstil blev startskuddet til en ny spirende lyd, som allerede dengang var årtier forud for sin tid. Lee "Scratch" Perry bliver ofte refereret til som "The Godfather of Dubs" og hans protégé Mad Professor er ligeså et veletableret fænomen indenfor udbredelsen af reggae og dub. Deres eksperimenterende tilgang til musikken klinger stadig den dag i dag gennem genrer fra hip hop til grime og dubstep.
Perry begyndte allerede i slutningen af 50’erne at indspille musik, men det var først, da han i 1968 startede sit eget pladeselskab, Upsetter Records, at der for alvor begyndte at komme vind i sejlene. Han fik stor opmærksomhed med singlen "People Funny Boy", da han var én af de første, som benyttede sig af samples og genskabte det klassiske reggae-beat i en ny og tungere udgave. Succesen voksede og resulterede i flere samarbejder med forskellige prominente musikartister, herunder Bob Marley og Paul McCartney.
I 2003 vandt Perry en Grammy for bedste reggae album med albummet Jamaican E.T, og i 2004 placerede Rolling Stones Perry på deres liste over de 100 største kunstnere nogensinde.
Samarbejdet mellem de to legender går tilbage til 80'erne, hvor Mad Professor blev taget under vingerne af Perry. Den Guyana-fødte englænder har i mere end et kvart århundrede udsendt hundredvis af singler og albums i eget navn, som producer og som ejer af pladeselskabet Ariwa. Han er dog mest mest kendt for sine remixes af pop-, electronica- og hip hop-stjerner som Jamiroquai, Depeche Mode og Beastie Boys. Derudover har hans samarbejde med Massive Attack fået bred anerkendelse og hans ”dubificering” af albummet Protection – udsendt som No Protection i 1995 – indtager hos mange stadig pladsen som hans musikalske hovedværk.
På sit eget pladeselskab har Mad Professor samarbejdet med, Sly & Robbie, Johnny Clarke, Pato Banton, Jah Shaka og Horace Andy. Derudover har han produceret for forskellige store labels som Sony Music, EMI, Warner Brothers, Capitol Record og Virgin Records.
