Efter 30 år vender Gounods Roméo og Juliette tilbage på Gran Teatre del Liceus scene i Co-produktion med Santa Fe Opera. Handlingen er flyttet til den amerikanske borgerkrig (1861-1865), der giver en klar sammenhæng for det uoverskuelige forhold mellem Capulets og Montagues. De elskende bor i et klassisk lighus, der foregriber deres fatale skæbne fra starten af deres forræderi. Historien handler om to menneskers udvikling, der fører fra en letsindig tilbøjelighed over en ansvarligt følt kærlighed til den uundgåelige dødelige afslutning, alt sammen fulgt op af Gounods fantastiske musik.
Aida Garifullina, som blev kåret af Plácido Domingo som "en af de mest spændende operadivaer i dag og i morgen", er Juliet sammen med Saimir Pirgu, som er blevet beskrevet af Opera Today som "en af verdens vigtigste fortolkere af lyriske tenorroller".
