Vibrerende grooves og vanvittig afrobeat opnår en højere harmoni, når de otte medlemmer i M.A.K.U. Soundsystem bruger personlige erfaringer som immigranter fra Colombia og deres ubegrænsede kærlighed til musikken til at skabe deres helt egen lyd.
M.A.K.U. Soundsystem inviterer til dans og deres musik taler til kroppen i et sprog, som består af frihed, nydelse, ømhed, overlevelse, men også foragt. For M.A.K.U. Soundsystem forsøger også at diskutere de svære politiske spørgsmål som der ikke findes umiddelbare svar på. Alle bandets medlemmer er født i Colombia, men bor nu i New York og deres musik er fortællingerne om et liv, der føles stadig mere usikkert og det er fortællingerne om USAs migrationspolitiker, der kun kan give foragt.
Erfaringerne som immigraneter er for M.A.K.U. Soundsystem en mulighed for at skabe noget sammen og for at finde en fælles stemme, hvor de højt og stolt kan fortælle om deres arv og deres kulturs fortid som de forbinder med fremtiden.
Musikken rammer kroppen. Man bliver simpelthen overvældet af de varme, flirtende lyde, der sender en fra Colombia til Nigeria videre til Kap Verde og tilbage til New York og et smeltedigel af musikalske traditioner. New York Times har beskrevet M.A.K.U. Soundsystem meget præcist, “afrocolombianske rytmer tilsat afrobeat, som bliver levet igennem formaninger og dansende grooves.”

M.A.K.U. Soundsystem is a powerhouse that’s been built over years of rehearsals and gigs, criss-crossing America from the Lincoln Center Outdoors -in their adopted hometown of New York- to Chicago, Los Angeles, Toronto, Canada and around the globe to the Roskilde Festival and onto the Atlantic Music Expo in Cape Verde. Everywhere they’ve won over friends: a storming appearance at globalFEST saw the band awarded a touring fund, while new outlets have kept heaping praise. Afropop Worldwide praised the “frantic terrain” the band explores. NPR raved about the “driving and gritty energy…this raw-edged, punk-tinged band explodes with the propulsive force of traditional rhythms and urban restlessness.”
M.A.K.U's music derives from their immigrant experience, which is an opportunity to create, to find a voice that speaks loud and proud, to connect past and future. A chance to make history.
