Dansk Kvindesamfund blev stiftet i København i 1871 og blev efter en årrække en stor og indflydelsesrig kvindeorganisation. I spidsen stod bl.a. ægteparret Mathilde og Fredrik Bajer, og organisationen husede kendte medlemmer som skolelederen Natalie Zahle, den første kvindelige læge Nielsine Nielsen, politikeren Svend Høgsbro og den senere nationalbankdirektør Marcus Rubin. Men blandt medlemmerne var også en lang række i dag ukendte mennesker, som tidligt meldte sig ind i kampen for kvinders rettigheder.
I dette foredrag sporer vi Dansk Kvindesamfunds tidlige medlemmer i de københavnske arkiver for at finde ud af, hvem disse modige mennesker var. Var det mænd eller kvinder, unge eller gamle, gifte eller ugifte? Og hvilke mærkesager var det, man støttede op om, når man sluttede sig til Dansk Kvindesamfund i slutningen af 1800-tallet? Eftermiddagens foredragsholdere er historiker Astrid Helene Nielsen fra Københavns Stadsarkiv og informationsspecialist i kønsforskning Jytte Nielsen fra Det Kgl. Bibliotek.
