Welcome to the first concert of the New Year and in the Spring/Winter program at Paolo's Jazz Club. 

The concert will be a dive into Paolo Russo’s unique music universe on both bandoneon and piano. You are invited on a journey across Italian flavours, classical tones, Nordic landscapes, free improvisations, with a distant echo of Argentinean tango.

ABOUT Paolo:

Born in Pescara, Italy, in 1969, he lives in Denmark since 1996. He started his studies with the cembalist Chiara Tiboni and graduated at “Conservatorio L. D’Annunzio” in Pescara, in 1993 (teacher: Rachele Marchegiani). In 2002, he graduated at the prestigious Rytmisk Musikkonservatorium in Copenhagen (teacher: Niels Thybo). During the past 28 years, he developed a very intense music activity, performing all around Europe, as well as Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, Japan, Faroe Islands, Thailand, Tanzania, Mozambique, Algeria, Russia, USA, Greenland and Cuba. He studied in New York with Richie Beirach (1995) and in Buenos Aires with Néstor Marconi (2004/2013).
In 2001, he started playing the bandoneon and discovered a new way of expressing his inner voice, including it more often in his own productions.

Besides, he recorded on over 50 productions of various artists, collaborating with many different international musicians, live and in studio. Among these, Stefano Bollani, Paolo Fresu, Pablo Ziegler, Eliel Lazo, Nico Gori, Jesper Bodilsen, Minino Garay, Karima Nayt, Josefine Cronholm, Thommy Andersson, Marcello Di Leonardo, Caroline Henderson, Poul Krebs, Etta Cameron, Bo Stief, Lelo Nika, Gianluigi Trovesi, Diego Figueiredo, Diego Schissi, Kenny Werner, Thomas Clausen, Bobby Ricketts, Ruslan Vilensky, Harold López-Nussa, Joe Barbieri, Calixto Oviedo, Bolette Roed, Julie Eskær, Michala Petri, Clarice Assad, Katya Sourikova, Svante Henryson.

He has worked as composer and soloist for string quartet, string orchestra, symphony orchestra and other ensembles, as well as for theatre, film and TV. He has performed in some of the most important concert halls in the world: Berliner Konzerthaus (Berlin-2009); Musikverein (Wien-2012); Carnegie Hall (New York City-2014). His instrumental work Tangology, composed for octet (with the brilliant interpretation of the Ensemble Midtvest), was presented in Denmark, in Italy (with Colibrì Ensemble) and in 2016 in New York City.

His anthology of original compositions for bandoneon, Bandoneon Solo Vol. II – Originals (CD and book), was defined a masterpiece by the great Argentine Maestro Néstor Marconi (his teacher, who also wrote the line notes for the book), while for his collaboration with one of the most prominent Scandinavian classical piano trios, Eskar Trio meets Paolo Russo, he composed and arranged new music specifically for the ensemble.

In November 2019, Paolo recorded his first Concerto for Bandoneon and Chamber Orchestra, together with the Zrenjaninski Kamerni Orkestar from Novi Sad (Serbia), conducted by Thommy Andersson. In the spring 2020, in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute in Copenhagen, he released Gocce di Musica (Music drops), an online 12-episode weekly music column, introducing his artistic journey through videos from his latest works and activities.

Since June 2022, on the West part of island Møn in the Southern part of Denmark, he runs together with his wife, singer and voice awareness teacher Katrine Krog Russo, the “Paolo’s Jazz Club”, an intimate, privately owned and self-financed live venue: a vision of a place where music takes first priority, creating intimate world class musical experiences, with highly profiled international artists.
