    Description

    [Arrangementet foregår på engelsk]
[This event will be held in English - English description below]

    • Kristian Bernt Karlson (Sociologisk Institut) – klassedominans
    • Alice el-Wakil (Institut for Statskundskab) – skæv repræsentation i demokratier

Join artist duo benandsebastian for a unique tribunal where the University of Copenhagen’s extensive collection of portrait busts will be critically assessed: Is it time for some of these monuments to retire – and how can we have this conversation in a nuanced way?

More than 40 busts of white, male scientists have been temporarily gathered in one installation, forming the stage for collective evaluation.

A jury of academics from across the University of Copenhagen will score the busts from different perspectives:

    • Storm Møller Madsen (Department of Arts and Cultural Studies) – patriarchy
    • Naja Dyrendom Graugaard (Department of Cross-Cultural and Regional Studies) – white supremacy and postcolonial perspectives
    • Kristian Bernt Karlson (Department of Sociology) – class dominance
    • Alice el-Wakil (Department of Political Science) – disproportional representation in democracies
    • Lejla Mrgan (Department of Arts and Cultural Studies) – artistic value
    • Lise Arleth (Vice-Dean for Research at the Faculty of Science) – academic legacy and research culture
    • Brian Arly Jacobsen (Department of Cross-Cultural and Regional Studies) – minority status
    • Özgür Yegâh (Department of Arts and Cultural Studies) – stakeholder interest and cultural heritage
    • Karin Tybjerg (Medical Museion) – global impact and history of science

The public is invited to witness this humorous yet thought-provoking process, where the university’s monument tradition is turned inside out from many angles.

The event is part of the contemporary art exhibition RECAST, marking the 150th anniversary of women’s admission to the university, and challenging traditions of commemorating knowledge and history through marble and bronze.

benandsebastian (Ben Clement, b. 1981; Sebastian de la Cour, b. 1980) is a Danish-British artists’ duo based in Copenhagen and Berlin. Their practice revolves around absences and flaws in our institutional systems and collective narratives. Through sculpture, installation and public artworks, they investigate gaps
in our knowledge – such as lost objects, incomplete artefacts or excluded narratives – and how these gaps shape our understanding of identity, responsibility and belonging.
