Reformationen var den første epokegørende historiske begivenhed, i hvilken musik
og sang kom helt frem i forgrunden. Musikkens kunst blev uløseligt knyttet til
det nye budskabs indhold og udbredelse, så der blev udviklet en helt ny musikkultur
i de protestantiske områder, hvor Luthers salmer bredte sig endnu hurtigere
end hans skrifter. Det blev nu afgørende og konstituerende for gudstjenesten,
at menigmand sang med på salmerne ved gudstjenesten. Også kvinderne, som
tidligere havde haft forbud mod at synge med.
