Filmen 'Så længe jeg lever' er en biografisk fortælling om den danske musiker John Mogensen, der blev national folkeeje i 1970'erne.
Historien følger Mogensen fra hans barndom over det første gennembrud med kvartetten Four Jacks til den hårde rejse mod toppen af de danske hitlister som soloartist. På sidelinjen står hustruen Ruth, og deres tumultariske ægteskab er sangerens eneste holdepunkt i en musiktilværelse, der domineres af lidenskab, angst og alkohol.
Instruktør og manuskriptforfatter Ole Bornedal går i sit portræt helt tæt på den lidende kunstner, der kæmper en indvendig og opslidende kamp mod sine egne dæmoner - hans perfektionistiske krav og søgen efter det fuldkomne.
'Så længe jeg lever' er dog også en humoristisk skildring af Danmark i 70'ere, hvor flere af datidens store personligheder som Otto Brandenburg, Johnny Reimer og politikeren Erhard Jakobsen portrætteres.
Hovedrollen spilles af Rasmus Bjerg, der har indspillet flere af John Mogensens gamle klassikere som ”Der er noget galt i Danmark” og 'Fut i fejemøget'
