Ghaliya er 27 år, da Islamisk Stat lukker sig om byen i det nordlige Irak, hvor hun bor. De militante islamister er særligt ude efter den religiøse gruppe, Ghaliya tilhører: ezidierne. Men det lokale militær trækker sig uden at advare befolkningen, som nu er overladt til sig selv. Ghaliya har det meste af sit liv haft ansvar for sine fire yngre søskende, men Ghaliya og søsteren Markaz mister kontakten til deres tre brødre under en kaotisk flugt. Islamisk Stat skiller mændene fra kvinderne, når de tager fanger. Ezidi-mændene likvideres, mens kvinder og børn udsættes for påtvungen konversion, religiøs indoktrinering, voldtægter og slaveri. Ghaliya og hendes søster tilbringer 285 dage i fangenskab hos flere forskellige IS-krigere, inden det lykkes dem at stikke af. SLAVE I ISLAMISK STAT er historien om en familie og et folk, der spredes for alle vinde under pres fra en af vor tids mest formørkede ideologier.
