THE SPACE LADY
The Space Lady - alias den nu 69 årige amerikanske Susan Dietrich - er en ægte musikalsk original. I slutningen af 70'erne begyndte hun at optræde på gaderne i Boston med skæve covers af pop-, country- og folknumre iklædt et sci-fi inspireret kostume med den karakteristiske hjelm med vinger, som hun bærer den dag i dag.
I begyndelsen optrådte hun med en harmonika, men da hun i 80'erne rykkede til San Francisco og samtidig erhvervede sig et casio-keyboard forvandlede hun sig for alvor til den kosmiske legende, som folk i dag forbinder hende med.
I San Franciscos progressive og frie musikmiljø blev The Space Lady et kultnavn med sine mystiske og dragende numre, der forenede drømmende pop og spacede lyde. The Space Ladys særprægede stemme og selvlærte keyboardteknik formåede at omdanne ofte kendte travere til spøgelsesklingende hymner fra fjerne galakser.
The Space Lady trak sig tilbage fra at optræde i 2000, uden på noget tidspunkt at have spillet regulære koncerter. Eneste dokument, der blev tilbage fra tiden i San Franciscos gader, var den hjemmeproducerede "The Space Lady Live in San Francisco". Dette blev først ændret ved mødet med Eric Schneider, der fik hende overtalt til at vende tilbage til musikken.
I mellemtiden var kulten omkring hende vokset, bl.a. via Irwin Chusids antologi over outsider-musikere "Songs in the Key of Z". Efter hendes tilbagevenden til musikken, har The Space Lady da også optrådt på vigtige festivaler som Pop Revo og Le Guess Who, ligesom opsamlingen "The Space Lady's Greatest Hits" blev udgivet i 2013.
