Der bor godt 40.000 mennesker på Vesterbro. For 100 år siden boede der dobbelt så mange. Boligspekulanter byggede Vesterbro i sidste halvdel af 1800-tallet. Boligerne var små, utætte og bygget alt for hurtigt og alt for tæt. Det værste slum blev allerede saneret væk fra 1960’erne, men den store forandring af bydelen kom med den offentlige byfornyelse i 1990’erne. Boliger blev lagt sammen, baghuse blev revet ned og grønne gårde blev etableret i stedet. En anden slags mennesker flyttede ind og kvarteret ændrede karakter.
Sammenholdet blev bevaret trods beboerfornyelsen og man gik stadig sammen om at løse bydelens problemer med dårlige boliger, arbejdsløshed, stofbrugere, hjemløse, manglende grønne områder osv.
På byvandringen ser vi boliger før og efter byfornyelsen, grønne gårde, arbejdspladser, forskellige netværks sociale arbejde i bydelen og selvfølgelig Istedgade – gaden, der aldrig overgiver sig.
