From the 18th-century bans on Ukrainian printing to Soviet “Russification” and the imposition of Russian in education and administration, the Ukrainian language has long stood at the center of political control and resistance. For centuries, empires tried to erase it — censoring its books and silencing its speakers. And yet, the Ukrainian language endured.

Today, the struggle continues. In territories occupied since 2014 — and especially after 2022 — Ukrainian schools have been shut down, teachers punished for using the language, and communities forced to switch to Russian. These acts of “linguicide” show that the attack on language is also an attack on identity.

Від заборон українського друку у XVIII столітті до радянської “русифікації” та нав’язування російської мови в освіті й політиці — українська мова століттями стояла в центрі національного опору. Протягом століть імперії намагалися стерти її: цензурували книжки, змушували мовчати її носіїв. І все ж українська мова вистояла.

Сьогодні ця боротьба триває. На територіях, окупованих із 2014 року, а особливо після 2022-го, українські школи закривають, учителів карають за використання української мови, громади примушують переходити на російську. Ці акти “лінгвоциду” доводять, що напад на мову — це напад на ідентичність.

Напередодні Дня української мови та писемності запрошуємо вас на подію про історію і сучасний стан української мови — про її виживання, трансформацію та значення сьогодні.

Кураса НАН України) говоритиме про сучасні мовні практики, про те, як українці вибудовують ідентичність через мову та що означає говорити українською під час війни.
