The last day18th October is included Yuri’s public presentation (KL15 to 17). If participants wish, there will also be a performance with the self-build instruments.

Programme:

1) 15, 16 and 17th Oct 2020 KL. 10 - 17, the participants will build the following instruments,

Hacked Hard Disc:

Turning an old hard disc drive into a low frequency siren.

Home Swinger:

Landman’s most elaborate experimental instrument based on predecessors developed by Glenn Branca and Harry Partch. This is a 12 string '3rd Bridge' overtone zither that creates wonderful elegant rich oriental/harp sounds.

It also features the harmonic series as its scale and give a good introduction about just intonation, resonance, harmonics, overtone theory, musical scales and microtonality.

Tunable Kalimba:

Landman’s most recent instrument improvement. The Kalimba is usually in one specific key and scale. Yuri found a system that allows you to easily adapt the tuning to a desired key/scale, without unmounting the tines. Very practical if you want to integrate kalimba in your 12 tone piano or guitar compositions!

Yuri Phone Home:

Hacking an old telephone horn and turning it into a radio voice microphone. You can declare ww3 or announce other evil messages with this device and everybody will believe you and be scared! The phone features a kill switch, that allows you to mute undesried feedback or create voice stutters, similar to what Rage Against the Machine did on guitar.

2) 18th October 2020

KL.12 Group lunch served

KL.13 - 15 Ending of the workshop and preparation

KL.15 - 17 Public presentation, talk and concert by Yuri Landman

About the artist:

Yuri Landman (1973) is a musician and an inventor of musical instruments. Based on prepared guitar techniques, he built his first instrument in 2001 to solve the inaccuracy of instant preparations. He has built experiments for acts such as Sonic Youth, dEUS, Melt-Banana, Rhys Chatham, Ex-Easter Island Head, Half Japanese, Kaki King.

In the past seven years he has given over 100 DIY-instrument building workshops in Europe and the US at music festivals, music academies, art academies, concert venues and art spaces. In 2012 Yuri Landman and Bart Hopkin published Nice Noise, a book about string preparations and extended techniques for guitar. In the same year he started his band Bismuth with Arnold van de Velde followed by an album in 2014 Bismuth.

Institutes such as MIM (Phoenix), Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ, WORM, Extrapool, Sonoscopia own collections of his instruments. Articles about his work have appeared in Pitchfork, The Guardian, CNN, Libération, El País
