Den ghanesiske simigwa-stjerne Gyedu-Blay Ambolley er tilbage med nyt album og det højenergiske Sekondi Band. Med et dansabelt mix af highlife, rap og funk tænder de op under dansefesten på ALICE til februar. 

Saxofonisten og sangeren Gyedu-Blay Ambolley vækkede allerede seriøs opsigt tilbage i 1973, da han i sin hjemby Sekondi-Takoradi i det vestlige Ghana introducerede et helt nyt musikalsk kapitel. I en krydsning mellem groovy highlife, rap, jazz, soul og rastløs funk, skabte Ambolley den såkaldte simigwa-do-lyd. Genren, der siden har fået mange kroppe ud på dansegulvet, har ikke alene givet ham titlen “the Simigwahene” (kongen af simigwa), men også skrevet ham ind i musikhistorien som den første der eksperimenterede med rap-elementer på sine albumindspilninger. Ambolleys tekstunivers forholder sig ofte til Ghanas historie og politiske situation, og gør ham til en vigtig stemme i kritikken af emner som ulighed, korruption og neo-kolonialisme.

Siden sin debut for mere end 4 årtier siden, har den musikalsk ustoppelige sanger, sangskriver, bandleder, multi-instrumentalist og producer samarbejdet med ikoner som Sammy Lartey og Ebo Taylor og indspillet over 30 albums, hvoraf “The Message”, “Akoka Ba”, “Simigwa Soca" og “Burkina Faso” blev genudgivet på 12” vinyl på Analog Africa i år.

Det nyeste udspil,“KETAN” (Agogo Records, 2017), er et højenergisk album indspillet med det 8 mand store Sekondi Band, der tæller nogle af tidens mest vitale ghanesiske musikere. Forvent en seriøs dansefest når han gæster ALICE og spiller første danske koncert nogensinde med sit Sekondi Band.

Born in the city of Sekondi-Takoradi in the Western Region of Ghana, West Africa, now legendary Gyedu-Blay Ambolley exploded on the music scene in 1973 with a jazzy, funky and soulful Highlife sound called “SIMIGWA-DO.” Today the versatile, irrepressible singer, bandleader, multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, producer and "musical-life-force" has 30 music albums to his credit, including his new album “KETAN” (Agogo Records, 2017). Don’t miss Gyedu-Blay Ambolley and his outstanding Sekondi Band when they make their first European appearances ever!

Koncerten er en del af Vinterjazz en landsdækkende musikfestival, som har eksisteret siden 2001 og foregår hvert år i februar. Festivalen strækker sig over tre uger og er arrangeret i samarbejde med flere end 150 spillesteder og arrangører fra Skagen til Bornholm. Vinterjazz 2019 finder sted fra 1-24 februar
