ARTIST ED ATKINS AND WRITER STEVEN ZULTANSKI IN CONVERSATION ABOUT THEIR NEW PLAY ‘SORCERER’ AT REVOLVER.

Ed Atkins and Steven Zultanski discuss the making of their play Sorcerer, and how they translate ideas from film, music, art, and literature into theater.

Specifically, they will discuss their interest in the realism of anti-illusionistic art and documentary practices, and how these strategies can be put in productive tension with the realism of virtuosic technique, special effects, and gadgetry. Both conjure a ‘real’ world and touch on the intractability of reality – both its resistance to clear meaning and its sweetness, weirdness.

Curator and Researcher Irene Campolmi will be in conversation with Ed Atkins and Steven Zultanski to discuss and explore in details aspects related to the play and their artistic research.

The salon is a collaboration between the Bikuben Foundation and Theater Republique.

Bio Ed Atkins 
Ed Atkins (Oxford, UK, 1982) lives and works in Copenhagen. 

Recent solo exhibitions include the New Museum, New York (2021); Kunsthaus Bregenz and K21 Düsseldorf (both 2019); Martin-Gropius-Bau, Berlin; MMK Frankfurt; DHC/ART, Montréal (all 2017); Castello di Rivoli and Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Turin; The Kitchen, New York; SMK, Copenhagen (all 2016); Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam (2015), The Serpentine Gallery, London (2014); Julia Stoschek Collection, Düsseldorf (2013); and MoMA PS1 (2012). Atkins was included in the 56th and 58th Venice Biennales, the 13th Lyon Biennial, and Performa 13 and 19. Forthcoming solo projects include Tank, Shanghai, and Tate Britain. 

Atkins is the author of A Primer for Cadavers (2016) and Old Food (2019), both published by Fitzcarraldo Editions. He is the subject of several monographs, including a catalogue raisonné from Skira in 2017. A new book of Atkins’ drawings for children was published by König Books last July. 

Bio Steven Zultanski 
Steven Zultanski is an american writer and is the author of several books, including RELIEF, ON THE LITERARY MEANS OF REPRESENTING THE POWERFUL AS POWERLESS, and BRIBERY (translated into Danish as Bestikkelse). He lives in Copenhagen. 

Bio Irene Campolmi 
Irene Campolmi is a curator and a researcher based in Copenhagen. where for many years, she has focused her work on performance, through which she has investigated postcolonial, queer and feminist theories. Her research and practice have also concentrated on creating the conditions to apply ethics in curatorial work. 

Since 2019, Irene Campolmi is the Head Art Program and Curator of Enter Art Program, a publicly funded satellite program of performances and talks in conjunction with Enter Art Fair. Together with Copenhagen Contemporary, she has won the Bikuben Vision Award 2021, Denmark's most prestigious curatorial award, as the lead researcher and curator of the exhibition and research project" Yet, it Moves!". The project explores new forms of collaboration between scientists, curators and artists, and it is developed in collaboration with Niels Bohr Institute, Copenhagen; CERN, Geneva; Interactive Minds Centre, Aarhus and Mod Lab at UC Davis. 

In 2022, she will be the Head Curator of the International Performance Festival “Walk & Talk” in San Miguel, Azores Islands and the Curator of the Performance Festival Art In A Day together with the Copenhagen art agency, Creator Projects. She has worked as an independent curator and a researcher for ten years within art museums and institutions across the world, including the Museum of Art in Joliette, Canada; The Power Plant, Toronto; MAAT, Lisbon; Copenhagen Contemporary, Copenhagen; MAH, Terceira; Kunsthal Charlottenborg, Copenhagen, and the 58th Venice Biennial where she co-curated the Estonian Pavilion Birth V. Hi, & Bye by Kris Lemsalu. In the past, her curatorial research and practice have focused on curatorial ethics. Before joining the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Copenhagen as a PhD Fellow (2013-2016), she worked as a researcher in the Max Planck Institute research group "Objects in the Contact Zone: The Cross-Cultural Life of Things”. 

The debate is slated to take place at the Reaktor stage at Teater Republique on Monday March 21th, at 17.30-19.00, and will be unfolding in English.

BILLEDKUNSTNER ED ATKINS OG DIGTER STEVEN ZULTANSKI I SAMTALE OM DERES NYE FORESTILLING ’SORCERER’.

Mød Ed Atkins og Steven Zultanski i en talk om tilblivelsen af deres forestilling Sorcerer på Revolverscenen på Teater Republique. I samtale med kurator og forsker Irene Campolmi fortæller de, hvordan de omsætter film, musik og billedkunst til en scenisk form.

De har en fælles interesse i anti-illusorisk kunstgreb og dokumentariske praksisser, som de sætter i spil med specialeffekter, gadgets og virtuose teknikker.

Atkins og Zultanskis intention med salonen er at fortælle, hvordan de med kunstneriske strategier vil skabe en reel verden og røre ved virkelighedens umedgørlighed, dens modstand mod at danne mening samt virkelighedens iboende skønhed og særhed.

Salonen er et samarbejde mellem Teater Republique og Bikubenfonden. Den finder sted på Teater Republiques Reaktorscene mandag den 21. marts kl. 17.30-19.00, og foregår på engelsk.
