I 1931 vendte Karen Blixen hjem til sin mor som fraskilt, falleret og med et helbred, der var alvorligt svækket efter mange års kviksølbehandling mod syfilis. Det var da 17 år siden, hun havde forladt barndomshjemmet for at etablere sig som kaffefarmer i Kenya. Kaffefarmen var nu under afvikling og godt tre måneder forinden havde Blixen mistet den mand hun gennem 13 år havde elsket, da han styrtede ned med sin flyvemaskine.
Med sig i bagagen havde Blixen også et manuskript til en novellesamling på engelsk, der knap tre år senere udkom i New York under titlen Seven Gothic Tales (1934). Med de Syv fantastiske Fortællinger vandt Blixen international anerkendelse fra den ene dag til den anden. Opmærksomheden blev ikke mindre efter mesterværkerne Den afrikanske farm (1937) og Vinter-Eventyr (1942).
