Somi er en af de nye store musikalske åbenbaringer i amerikansk vokaljazz – takket være sit anmelderroste, aktivistiske Miriam Makeba-projekt, der hylder den sydafrikanske sangerinde og ikon i kampen mod apartheid. Amerikansk-fødte Somi kom til verden i delstaten Illinois med immigrantforældre fra Rwanda og Uganda. Med den store sydafrikanske trompetist og komponist Hugh Masekela som mentor er det lykkes Somi at træde sin helt egen sti som kunstner og aktivist. I 2021 blev hun den første afrikanske kvinde nogensinde til at opnå en nominering i en jazz-kategori ved den amerikanske Grammy.
New York Times har kaldt hende “a performer in full command of her instrument and powers”, mens amerikanske NPR beskriver hende som “an elegant amalgam of the musics she loves and the bi-continental experiences that have shaped her life”. Rammende ord for en kunstner, der har fundet sit virkningsfulde udtryk i og sin musikalske identitet i en konstant balancegang mellem to grundpiller – Afrika og USA.
Somis seneste album “Zenzile: The Reimagination of Miriam Makeba” (2021) er en stjernespækket og dybt personlig hyldest til kunstner og aktivist Miriam Makeba AKA Mama Africa, der blev et verdensnavn under sine 31 år i politisk eksil under Sydafrikas apartheid.
Allerede året forinden fejrede Somi sin måske hidtil største triumf med det halvspontane, selvudgivne album “Holy Room” (2020). Albummet dokumenterede en aften i Frankfurts Alte Oper med Somi flankeret af Frankfurt Radio Big Band, guitaristen Hervé Samb og pianist Toru Dodo. “Holy Room” skaffede Somi hendes historiske Grammy-nominering i kategorien Best Jazz Vocal Album.
Copenhagen Jazz Festival er stolte af for første gang at kunne byde velkommen til én af moderne vokaljazz’ største nye stemmer, når fænomenet Somi indtager udendørsscenen med havudsigt under koncerttemaet Jazz by the Sea.
