Baba Commandant & The Mandingo Band fra Burkina Faso spiller moderne afrobeat tilsat en solid dosis rock’n’roll. Den karismatiske frontmand Baba Commandant aka - Mamadou Sanou - fører an med sin rå og soulede vokal, mens musikken forener pumpende afrobeat-rytmer, støjende guitarriffs og tranceagtige improvisationspassager. Bandet udgav for nylig deres andet studiealbum “Siri ba Kele” på det trendsættende amerikanske pladeselskab SUBLIME FREQUENCIES, og efter forrygende koncerter på både Global i 2015 og på Roskilde Festival året efter, er de klar til at nedlægge Nørrebro endnu en gang.
Baba Commandant er oprindeligt fra Burkina Fasos næststørste by, Bobo-Dioulasso, og er et veletableret navn på landets musikscene. Hans publikum tæller yngre såvel som ældre generationer, og han optræder både til søndagsforsamlinger i Bobo-Dioulasso og sound system-fester i hovedstaden Ouagadougou.
Udover Baba Commandant på vokal og strengeinstrumentet ngoni tæller The Mandingo Band to guitarister, en bassist og en trommeslager, der leverer en mere rock-inficeret lyd, end hvad man normalt oplever inden for genren. Her er der både plads til psykedeliske guitarsoloer og metal-inspirerede riffs – som bloggen Spectrum Culture påpeger, kan det lyde som "Fela Kuti cranking it up to 11". Det til trods slipper bandet ikke kontakten til den traditionelle vestafrikanske mandingo-musik.

Baba Commandant & The Mandingo Band are a contemporary group from Burkina Faso. Coming from Bobo-Dioulasso, the group is steeped in the Mandingue musical traditions of their ancestral legacy. The enigmatic lead singer Baba Commandant (Mamadou Sanou) is an original and eccentric character who is well respected in the Burkinabé musical community. A sort of punk Faso Dan Fani activist for traditional Mandingo music, Baba continues to redefine the boundaries between traditional and modern. The band played marvelous concerts at Global and Roskilde Festival a few years back, and we’re looking forward to welcome them again.
