Solid psykedelisk rock fra Istanbul! De ubestridte mestre af det 21 århundredes tyrkiske psych, BaBa ZuLa, spiller første danske koncert i 6 år når de gæster ALICE under Vinterjazz.
Da BaBa ZuLa introducerede deres band på Istanbuls rockscene første gang i 1996, udfordrede de øjeblikkeligt alle hidtidige forestillinger om hvordan tyrkisk musik kan lyde. Ved at blande orientalske instrumenter som elektrisk saz, darbuka og percussion-skeer med moderne elektroniske klange, skabte bandet nemlig deres helt egen lyd, som de siden har kaldt “Istanbul psychedelic”. Det forfriskende take på tyrkisk psych er i den grad også kommet til udtryk gennem årene under deres næsten rituelle liveshows, hvor bandet bl.a. har eksperimenteret og udfordret koncertformatet med teater, digtoplæsning, mavedansere, kostumer og live tegning!
BaBa ZuLa har gennem årene haft gæsteoptrædener fra bl.a. Alexander Hacke (Einstüerzende Neubauten), Jaki Liebezeit (Can) og den tyrkiske diva og operasangerinde Semiha Berksoy. Deres faste line-up består af Levent Akman på percussion og elektronik, darbuka- og percussion-spiller Ümit Adakale, Periklis Tsoukalas på elektrisk oud og vokal, samt Murat Ertel på elektrisk saz, theremin og vokal. Sidstnævnte er desuden medlem i Dirtmusic, som spillede en dragende mørk rockkoncert på ALICE sidste år.
BaBa ZuLa har en flot række udgivelser bag sig. Dog er de mere eksperimenterende og excentriske end nogensinde på deres nyeste album “Derin Derin” (Glitterbeat Records 2019), som er deres første udgivelse i 5 år og som delvist består af musik, som de skrev til en dokumentarfilm om falke. Musikken trækker på vildskaben fra tyrkisk psych såvel som ømheden fra anatolske traditioner, og er hærdet med støjede referencer til krautrock-pionererne i Can og krydret med elektrodub-eksperimenter produceret i samarbejde med Mad Professor. BaBa ZuLa har tidligere spillet på både Roskilde Festival og Global, og vi glæder os til at få dem tilbage på dansk jord under Vinterjazz 2020.

The unrivalled masters of 21st century Turkish psychedelic music, BaBa ZuLa go to great lengths to provide their followers with a unique experience both on their live shows and their recordings. By mixing oriental instruments such as the electric saz, darbuka, and spoons with electronics and modern sounds, BaBa ZuLa creates a sound all their own called Istanbul psychedelic. The band go to great lengths to provide their fans with a unique live show experience. They just released their new and critically acclaimed record “Derin Derin”, consisting of music that they wrote for a documentary about falcons. This February they’ll play their first Danish concert since 2013.
