Der er lagt op til en storsvingende fusion af afrikanske og latinamerikanske stilarter, når det ti mand store orkester Bixiga 70 gæster ALICE til et brag af en aften.
Orkestrets navn såvel som musikalske ånd har udgangspunkt i afrobeat-kongen Fela Kutis legendariske Africa 70, men São Paulo-baserede Bixiga 70 er aldrig i nærheden af blot at være et tribute-band. Tværtimod hyldes det internationalt som et af de mest originale bud på moderne afrobeat. Med elementer af alt fra brasiliansk folkemusik over malinké-rytmer fra Guinea til amerikanske blaxploitation-soundtracks
Udover at være en hyldest til Africa 70, refererer orkestrets navn også til kvarteret Bixiga i det centrale São Paulo, hvor medlemmerne fandt sammen i 2010. En stor del af Bixagas indbyggere er af afrikansk eller italiensk afstamning, og kvarteret er kendt som et af byens livligste. Bixiga 70, hvis ti medlemmer tidligere har slået deres folder inden for genrer som avantgarde-pop, jazz og brasiliansk musik, er indbegrebet af den kulturelle smeltedigel og den spirende DIY-kreativitet, som deres hjemkvarter er berømt for. Orkestrets debutalbum udkom i 2011 og blev hurtigt anerkendt på diverse “Best of”-lister i hjemlandet. Ikke længe efter begyndte Bixiga 70 at turnere internationalt og besøgte bl.a. i 2013 Roskilde Festival, hvor de spillede en forrygende nattekoncert. Tilbage i 2016 kunne Global præsentere bandet under Copenhagen Jazz Festival, hvor bandet indtog DR Koncerthuset med et ligeledes storslået koncertbrag.
Bixiga 70s seneste album “III” (2015), fremhæves af bl.a. The Guardian som deres bedste til dato. Musikmagasinet R2 roser desuden orkestrets musik for at være “så fandens livsbekræftende funky, at den muligvis kan vække de døde til live”. Der er garanti for et afrobeat-brag af de store, når Bixiga 70 indtager ALICE!

Coming from diverse musical backgrounds, a meeting of musicians involved in São Paulo’s avantgarde pop, jazz, dub and Brazilian scenes results in the orchestra Bixiga 70. With their genre-spanning mix of afro- beat, Guinean malinké, Brazilian candomblé, samba and cumbia, Bixiga 70 are a welcome addition to any party. Taking Fela Kuti’s Afrika 70 band as a launchpad both in name and spirit, this ten piece band and their fusion of African and South American rhythms cause havoc in any dance.
