Johannes Brahms: Ein deutsches Requiem er på én og samme tid et stort og pompøst værk, inspireret af barok-komponister som Bach, Händel og Schütz, og et inderligt og meget personligt stykke sørgemusik, der rækker ud til det inderste i medmennesket.
Brahms skrev sit requiem i årene mellem 1865-68. Værket er formentlig inspireret af to dødsfald, Brahms mistede først sin nære ven og mentor, komponisten Robert Schumann, og siden sin mor.
Brahms ønske var at skrive ”en slags tysk requiem”, har han fortalt i et brev til Clara Schumann, og som tekst brugte han derfor ikke, som traditionelt, den latinske tekst fra den katolske liturgi, men bibelcitater fra den tyske bibeloversættelse.
Selv havde han fundet trøst i de dele af teksten, der handler om, hvordan de efterladte oplever døden, og hans værk kom til at handle om, hvordan man finder mening i livet, selv om man ved at man selv - og dem, man holder af - skal dø.
Værket er, hvor selvmodsigende det måske end lyder, et opløftende requiem, ment til at trøste de efterladte.
Værket opføres i den såkaldte Londoner-version for kor, to solister, firhændigt klaver og pauker.
Solister er Iben Silberg, sopran, og Teit Kanstrup, baryton.
Ved flyglet sidder Jørgen Ellegård Frederiksen og Susanne Skov
For den musikalske ledelse står Torben H.S. Svendsen.
