Dawdas visionære kora-spil kommer ud på nye musikalske territorier, når han besøger ALICE med sin kvartet bestående af Preben Carlsen, Francis Osei og Sal Dibba
Hos Dawda Jobarteh mødes ældgamle afrikanske traditioner med et åbent sind og en moderne tilgang. Den gambisk-fødte musiker er født ind i griot-familien Jobarteh, som i generationer har været musikere og historiebærere. At han har den musikalske arv i orden høres i hans sublime strengespil på den harpelignende kora.
For Dawda Jobarteh, der nu har gjort Danmark til sit hjem, er der dog ikke nogen modsætning mellem at tage griot-arven dybt seriøst og udforske koraen i relation til nye klangmuligheder og samarbejdspartnere. Især henter Jobarteh stor inspiration i jazzen, hvilket bl.a. mærkes på seneste album, ‘Transitional Times’, der sender eksplicitte hilsner i retning af John Coltrane.
Dawdas tredje album, “I Met Her by the River”, udkom tidligere i år på Sterns Music. Det anerkendte britiske tidsskrift, Songlines, kvitterede med 5 stjerner og skrev, at Dawda på imponerende vis “bringer sin griot-arv ud på nye territorier på kora-eventyr, som er både vovede og sindsoprivende.”
Med sig på ALICE har Dawda foruden et nyt album også den danske bassist Preben Carlsen, samt trommeslageren Francis Osei og percussionist Sal Dibba.

Although to meet him it might not be obvious, Dawda Jobarteh takes his griot heritage very seriously, and as the grandson of Alhaji Bai Konte and son of Amadou Bansang Jobarteh, he is at the epicentre of Gambia’s musical aristocracy. This night the great kora player will perform in his quartet together with Preben Carlsen, Francis Osei and Sal Dibba.
