Becoming Nipituut!

Composer, DJ and musical producer Aqqalu Berthelsen, also known as Uyarakq, will talk together with visual artist Julie Edel Hardenberg about becoming nipituut, breaking the colonial silence and (self) de-colonizing the context of Kalaallit Nunaat and the Nordic region.

The two artists will exchange experiences across generations about being born and raised in Nuuk and shaped by the Danish (colonial) model. Displacement of ingenuity from society as from the body itself is at the core of both their practices, challenging how alienation is familiarized and the familiar alienated.

Throughout the talk they will delve into selected artworks of theirs, embarking on questions such as: How does one center the marginalized? How to reclaim ingenuity? And how do we make the unheard heard?

Hardenberg and Berthelsen both contributed to the exhibition New Red Order Presents: One if by Land, Two if by Sea shown this summer at Kunsthal Charlottenborg. The exhibition connected artists and works from different parts of the world, from Kalaallit Nunaat and Sápmi to Hawaii, in a critical and humorous exploration of ingenious pasts, present and futures.

Becomings is a series of talks that presents artists and researchers who use their work to examine, disrupt, and push back against the effects of colonialism. The series unfolds gestures understood as “acts of becoming,” to quote the artist Grada Kilomba. Here, those labeled by colonial history as “other” retort; and becoming is made possible in the act of utterance that shoulders its way into the paradigms of Western historiography, imaginings, and emotions.

The series resonates with the growing demand for historical restoration and the desire to let other experiences, forms of knowledge and sensibilities intervene into our way of shaping and inhabiting the world.
