Den ukrainske træner Valeriy Lobanovskyi regnes for at være en af hovedmændene bag totalfodbold. I “Lobanovskiy Forever” får man historien om den legendariske Sovjet- og Dynamo Kiev-træner, som var kendt for at have en både smuk og videnskabelig tilgang til fodboldspillet.
Under Lobanovskiy vandt Dynamo Kiev som den første sovjetiske klub en europæisk titel, da holdet i 1986 vandt med 3-0 over Atletico Madrid i Pokalvindernes Turnering i en kamp, hvor Dynamo spillede fodbold som et ”hold fra en anden planet”. To år senere tabte Lobanovskyi EM-finalen med Sovjet, men genopfandt sig selv og førte i 1999 Dynamo Kiev til semifinalen i Champions League.
Filmen er baseret på arkivfilmmateriale samt kommentarer og erindringer om Lobanovskiy fra trænere, journalister, fans og modstandere, der fortæller historien om en karismatisk mand, der var kendt for aldrig at smile og forlangte det maksimale af sine spillere. Udover at være en interessant fodboldfilm giver “Lobanovskiy Forever” også et vigtigt indblik i sport og politik i Sovjetunionen og Ukraine i årene efter Murens fald.

Lobanovskiy Forever is an exploration of a cult legacy of the Dynamo Kiev manager, Valeri Vasilievich Lobanovskiy, who led Dynamo Kiev to become the first Soviet team to win a major European trophy . The life of the football legend is examined through archival footage and interviews with the generations of local and international football stars and sports writers who share their memories and analysis.
