Igennem de seneste år er tatoveringer kommet til at spille en stadigt større rolle for folk i Arktis. Både i stil og placering på huden trækker den ny tids tatovører på dybehistoriske traditioner, der igennem årtier var næsten forsvundet.
En hovedkræfterne bag bevægelsen er den internationalt orienterede grønlandske tatoveringskunstner Maya Sialuk Jacobsen. Maya er igennem omfattende studier af historiske kilder og genstande nået frem til en pan-inuitiske (for)historie om tatoveringerne og deres - sociale og spirituelle - betydning.
Seniorforsker Martin Appelt har i næssten 30 år beskæftiget sig med før-Inuitiske og tidlig inuitiske (for)historie, primært i arktisk Canada og Grønland.
Til denne lejlighed har han undersøgt, hvilke vidnesbyrd der findes i det arkæologiske materiale om før-Inuitiske tatoveringstraditioner.
