To dage efter at en kvinde forsvinder, bliver hendes grædende baby fundet i en motorvejsrabat i Mexico. Med sort tusch er der skrevet to telefonnumre på den lille piges arme. En lokal advokat med en Batmanfigur i en kæde om halsen hører om forsvindingen før politiet.
Sammen med advokaten leder Magnus Boding Hansen efter morderen. Han er Weekendavisens korrespondent i Latinamerika gennem fem år. På en ny rejse gennem Mexico, Brasilien og Venezuela forsøger han at forstå mysteriet om Latinamerikas mange mord. Latinamerika er verdens voldeligste verdensdel – med små tre millioner mord siden årtusindeskiftet. I samme periode er regionen ellers blevet rigere og mindre ulige. Hvad er gået galt?
Svarene søger han blandt andet hos Sinaloakartellet. Hos en hemmelig indiansk agent, som udfordrer Venezuelas præsident. Og hos en brasiliansk alenemor, der blev forført til et liv med kriminalitet, men fandt en vej væk fra volden og i dag lever af at bygge violiner.
OM FORFATTEREN:
MAGNUS BODING HANSEN (f. 1986) er journalist på Weekendavisen, hvor han fra 2015 til 2020 var Latinamerikakorrespondent. Har studeret krig ved King’s College London og er cand.mag. i retorik. Han har været RÆSONs ansv. chefredaktør, journalist på DR2 Deadline og rapporteret fra en række konfliktzoner.
