En af de førende stemmer fra Cairos sprudlende eksperimenterende musikscene vender tilbage til ALICE og Copenhagen Jazz Festival. Forvent en blanding af overjordisk arabisk vokal, jazzet improvisation og moderne elektronik, når Nadah El Shazly optræder med sin kvartet under åben himmel på Onkel Dannys Plads.

Den egyptiske sangerinde og komponist Nadah El Shazly er en af hovedskikkelserne på den eksperimenterende Cairo-scene, der også tæller navne som Dwarfs of East Agouza og Maurice Louca. Fælles for projekterne er, at de forener rødder fra den traditionelle arabiske musik med moderne jazz, elektronik og eksperimenterende rock. Nadah El Shazly startede som ung på den egyptiske punkscene, inden hun begyndte at eksperimentere med elektronisk musik. Som solist brød hun i 2017 igennem med med det overdådige album ‘Ahwar’, skabt i samarbejde med Maurice Louca og Sam Shalabi. Albummet modtog fremragende anmeldelser og havnede bl.a. på en prominent 12. plads på The Wires liste over årets albums.
Pladens visionære blanding af moderne elektronik, jazzede passager og overjordisk arabisk vokal har fået folk til at omtale Nadah El Shazly som en mellemøstlig Björk eller Annette Peacock. Siden Nadah El Shazly spillede på ALICE under Copenhagen Jazz Festival i 2019 har vi glædet os til at få hende tilbage. Denne gang bliver det med kvartet med Sarah Page (harpe), Sam Shalabi (elektrisk guitar) og Jonah Fortune (kontrabas), på Onkel Dannys Plads under åben himmel.
Koncerten er en del af Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2022, der finder sted fra 24. juni til 10. juli på 120 venues i hele hovedstaden. Se programmet på www.jazz.dk

One of the leading voices from Cairo’s vibrating experimental music scene returns to ALICE and Copenhagen Jazz Festival. Expect a smooth blend of dreamy Arabian vocals, jazzy improvisation and modern electronics, when Nadah El Shazly performs with her quartet at an open air concert at Onkel Dannys Plads.

Producer and vocalist Nadah El Shazly, known for her fresh and fearless performances, is a prominent and captivating voice in the electronic music underworld of Cairo, also counting artists such as Dwarfs of East Agouza and Maurice Louca. The projects all combine roots from traditional Arabien music with modern jazz, electronics and experimental rock. El Shazly startet on the Egyptian punk scene before she started experimenting with electronic music. As a soloist, she debuted with the highly acclaimed album “Ahwar” in 2017. An album that both radically reinvents the popular music of her homeland and explores new sonic and harmonic frontiers. Using voice, field recordings and instruments she creates haunting sound pieces and song forms that hijack your perception of time.
We already once had the pleasure to present Nadah El Shazly at ALICE during the Copenhagen Jazz Festival in 2019, when she was playing an otherworldly solo show. Now she’s returning with her quartet, playing an open air show at Onkel Dannys Plads. The concert is a part of Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2022.
