Location

Date

Oct 05 2019 19:00 - 23:59

Description

The first Science & Cocktails of the season begins with the discovery that won this year’s breakthrough prize in fundamental physics and appeared in all newspapers around the world, from the New York Times to Jyllands-Posten. How does a black hole look like? Why does it look like a half-frosted donut? How crazy is it to coordinate 10 telescopes and 200 people across the globe? Why did we choose that particular black hole as a target? How many black holes are out there? Was Einstein right?

19:00 Doors open for cocktails
19:40 Brun Ild
20:30 The first image of a black hole with Feryal Özel
21:50 The Orgelheimers

We have all heard about it, but never actually seen it. On April 11th of this year, the first ever published image of a black hole captured by the Event Horizon Telescope got the world mesmerised. Or to be more precise, a picture of the edge of the supermassive black hole in the heart of the M87 galaxy. What did it take to make this image? Was it difficult to interpret the data? How can we see a black hole?

Feryal Özel, one of the core team members behind this discovery will describe the telescopes, the experiment, and the methods used to obtain the black hole image. What did we learn from this image about black holes and about Einstein’s theory?

Before the talk you will have the chance of watching for the first time ever, Brun Ild (translates directly to “Brown Fire”), taking their energetic live performance into a duo setup with a mix of brown funk and ethiojazz to warm up for the rest of the evening’s science, cocktails and entertainment.

After the talk, Lots and lots of organ... and then some more with The Orgelheimers. An explosion of surf, beat, a little more surf and some 70’s groove, some of this stuff might even - as terrifying as it may sound - have been playing as you were conceived.

Event held in English.

This event has the generous support of Novo Nordisk Fonden.
