The practice of unrolling ancient Egyptian mummies as a somewhat surreal public spectacle was first popularised in 1821 by surgeon and antiquary Thomas Pettigrew during the opening of a major exhibition at the Egyptian Hall in London's Piccadilly. Thereafter, for almost a century, such unrollings became a sensation throughout the UK and across Europe, as Pettigrew and his devotees filled both public lecture theatres and the private salons of the upper classes with this bizarre entertainment.

This Halloween, journey back in time to October 1898 with Egyptologist and cultural historian John J. Johnston for the rare and detailed recreation of a public mummy unrolling in the Glyptotek’s Central Hall. Please note that no actual Egyptian mummies will be part of the unrolling. But feel free to visit the mummy basement at the museum to see the real Egyptian Mummies.

About John J. Johnston
John J. Johnston is a freelance Egyptologist, Classicist, and cultural historian. A former Vice-Chair of the Egypt Exploration Society, he has lectured extensively at established museums and has contributed numerous articles to both academic and general publications. Amongst other books, he has co-edited an anthology of classic mummy fiction, “Unearthed” (Jurassic London, 2013), and he has recently appeared in the ten-part documentary series for Discovery Science, “Egypt’s Unexplained Files” (Rare TV, 2019).

Udpakninger af gamle ægyptiske mumier som et surrealistisk offentligt skuespil blev gjort populært i 1821 af kirurg og antikvar Thomas Pettigrew under åbningen af en stor ægyptisk udstilling i London. Derefter blev disse udpakninger en sensation i Storbritannien og over hele Europa, da Pettigrew og hans følge fyldte både offentlige forelæsningsteatre og private saloner for overklassen med denne bizarre underholdningsform.

Rejs tilbage i tiden til oktober 1898 med ægyptolog og kulturhistoriker John J. Johnston og oplev en detaljeret genskabelse af en offentlig mumieudpakning i Glyptotekets Festsal.

Ingen ægte ægyptiske mumier vil indgå i udpakningen - den ægte vare kan dog besøges i museets mumiekælder før og efter forestillingen. Forestillingen foregår på engelsk.
