Med inspiration fra ghanesisk musik, jazz og minimalistisk percussion og med et post-punket tankesæt har den engelske percussionist Bex Burch med sit band Vula Viel skabt et unikt udtryk. Oplev selv, når ALICE præsenterer trioen i Valby Kulturhus.
Tag musikere med tråde til både Englands progressive jazz-scene og post-punkens eksperimenterende tilgang og læg dertil en kærlighed til minimalistiske trommeforløb og ghanesisk musik. Trioen Vula Viel, der blev grundlagt i 2015 af percussionist Bex Burch, er et originalt og fascinerende bekendtskab.
Vula Viel opstod efter at Burch havde tilbragt tre år hos Dagaare-folket i det nordvestlige Ghana. Her studerede hun traditionel vestafrikansk xylofon - kendt under navnet gyil - med gyil-mesteren Thomas Sekgura som mentor. Hjemvendt til England forende hun sammen med de to medmusikere Ruth Goller (bas) og Jim Hart (trommer) den traditionelle ghanesiske percussion med et eklektisk mix af kontemporære indflydelser fra jazz, post-punk, electronica og Steve Reich-klingende minimalisme.
Både deres debutalbum, “Good is Good” og en række efterfølgende koncerter vakte hurtigt opsigt. Både punk-legende Iggy Pop og BBCs Gilles Peterson meldte sig som fans, og trioen optrådte med roste koncerter på Café OTO, WOMAD, Moers Festival m.fl.
Siden er fulgt yderligere to fremragende plader, “Do Not Be Afraid” og “What's Not Enough About That”, hvor trioen fortsætter med at udforske nuancerne af deres helt særlige udtryk. Glæd dig til at opleve trioen i København, når ALICE præsenterer koncert i Valby Kulturhus.

Bex Burch's Vula Viel is a group from London's incredible jazz+ scene, playing music based around the sound of the gyil, a wooden xylophone from West Africa, fused with elements of improvisation and minimal music.
Following the acclaimed release of ‘Do Not Be Afraid’ then 'What's Not Enough About That' and a busy tour that took them from UK to Europe and back, including a stellar performance at WOMAD captured by BBC Radio 3, Vula Viel continue their sonic explorations around the gyil, the wooden xylophone of the Dagaare from Upper West Ghana, on their brand new live set.
Bex Burch (gyil), Ruth Goller (bass) and Jim Hart (drums) continue to forge their own unique fusions, stretch out the band’s sound, at times delicate and at others moving into raw post punk soundscapes, drawing from classical, minimalist and Dagaare Ghanaian influences. A rare gem that we’re happy to present in Copenhagen.
